Background of the study
Maternal mortality remains a critical public health issue, particularly in areas where socio-economic disparities are pronounced. In Ifelodun Local Government Area, Osun State, maternal mortality is influenced by a complex interplay of socio-economic factors such as poverty, education, and access to healthcare services (Oladele, 2023). Economic hardships, coupled with limited educational opportunities, often hinder timely access to quality maternal care, resulting in increased risks during pregnancy and childbirth. Recent studies underscore that socio-economic determinants are significant predictors of maternal health outcomes, with disadvantaged populations experiencing higher mortality rates (Adeyemi, 2024). Furthermore, disparities in income, cultural practices, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure contribute to these adverse outcomes (Olu, 2025). This study aims to investigate the socio-economic factors that influence maternal mortality, providing insights that may inform targeted interventions to reduce preventable deaths and improve maternal health in the region.

Statement of the problem
Maternal mortality in Ifelodun is significantly affected by socio-economic challenges, including poverty, low educational attainment, and poor access to healthcare services. These factors contribute to delays in receiving adequate maternal care, resulting in higher mortality rates among mothers. The persistence of these issues highlights a critical need for research to identify and address the socio-economic determinants of maternal mortality in the area, thereby enabling the development of effective interventions (Oladele, 2023; Olu, 2025).

Objectives of the study:

  1. To identify socio-economic factors contributing to maternal mortality.

  2. To analyze the relationship between socio-economic status and maternal health outcomes.

  3. To recommend interventions to reduce maternal mortality rates.

Research questions:

  1. What socio-economic factors most significantly influence maternal mortality in Ifelodun?

  2. How does socio-economic status correlate with maternal health outcomes?

  3. What policy measures can mitigate the adverse effects of socio-economic disparities on maternal mortality?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Lower socio-economic status is associated with higher maternal mortality rates.

  2. Educational disparities significantly impact maternal health outcomes.

  3. Policy interventions targeting socio-economic inequities can reduce maternal mortality.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the socio-economic determinants of maternal mortality, providing evidence-based recommendations for policymakers and healthcare providers. The goal is to reduce maternal deaths through targeted socio-economic interventions (Oladele, 2023; Adeyemi, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to investigating socio-economic factors influencing maternal mortality in Ifelodun Local Government Area, focusing solely on local socio-economic and healthcare dynamics.

Definitions of terms:

  • Maternal Mortality: The death of a woman during pregnancy, childbirth, or postpartum.

  • Socio-economic Factors: Conditions related to income, education, and social status.

  • Maternal Health Outcomes: Health results pertaining to pregnancy and childbirth.
